LOS ALAMITOS, CA—AUGUST 24, 2012—Jolene Hales and Christian and Ru Anna Singletary’s Tres Of Linda enjoyed a breakthrough performance in the running of the $36,720 Adequan California Derby Challenge, as the daughter of Tres Seis defeated in a field that included the winning machine A Mere Dynasty and multiple stakes finalists Veyron and Whata Corona Runner on Friday at Los Alamitos.
Her performance was similar to her 2 ¼ length Adequan trial victory on August 5 and while the winning margin this time was only a length, it took her 4/100ths of a second less to cover the distance in the final than in the trial. After winning her trial in the fastest time of :19.86, Tres Of Linda came back with a near flawless effort in the finale. She broke a half-length ahead of her nine rivals and from there extended her lead with every stride en route to stopping the clock in :19.826.
Bred by the owners, Tres Of Linda improved her record to four wins in eight starts. She earned $16,891 for the win while also securing a berth to the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge to be held at Prairie Meadows in Iowa on Saturday, October 27. Scott Willoughby saddled Tres Of Linda, who was ridden to victory by Rodrigo Aceves.
“I had my hands covering my eyes,” Ru Anna Singletary said. “I couldn’t watch the start. When I saw her clear her rivals I knew that she had it. We are so proud of her.”
Tres Of Linda’s mother, the prolific Lindas Dasher, would be proud as well. Sired by Chicks Beduino, Lindas Dasher had a great career racing at Los Alamitos. In 34 career starts, she appeared in 19 stakes races and earned $331,703. She was second in each of her first four major graded stakes races. She was the runner-up in the Governors’ Cup Futurity, Ed Burke Memorial Futurity, PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and Governor’s Cup Derby. She also ran in the Los Alamitos Super Derby and the Champion of Champions and in the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap and Vessels Maturity.
“She was special,” Christian Singletary said of Lindas Dasher. “Her best race was probably when she ran second in the Ed Burke. We were watching her the whole time and she didn’t break all that great. Then she started making up ground and was coming in close to the leader. That’s the year that we also happened to win the Ed Burke with Heza Secret Diamond. We saw that it was Heza Secret Diamond that was winning the race and what a moment that was. Then we looked at the toteboard and we realized that Lindas Dasher had dead-heated for second place. That was probably her most memorable race.”
Singletary was nervous prior to the start of the Adequan California, mostly because of a delay caused when the number one horse What A Doll SR had to be backed out of the gate after becoming fractious. Her saddle also had to be quickly readjusted.
“The rest of the horses were in the gate so they had to wait,” he said. “When she gets in the gate she’s ready to go. I was afraid that she would fall asleep in there or get a little dull.”
“She broke a little slow, but she finished nicely,” Willoughby said. “Rodrigo had her geared down at the end. He didn’t have to push her hard.”
The Singletary’s shared the win with Jolene Hales of Texona Quarter Horses, which stands several barrel racing stallions. One of the Texona’s stallion – until his recent passing – was Rare Bar, the 1995 AQHA racing champion aged stallion with earnings of $236,000. Tres Of Linda is also eligible to the Los Alamitos Super Derby trials to be held on October 14.
“The plan right now is to race her in the Challenge, but we have to look at the schedule because she’s paid into the Super Derby,” Singletary said.
Dr. Steve Burns’ Attack The Cartel earned $7,344 for finishing second under jockey Oscar Peinado. Michael Casselman saddled the homebred Corona Cartel filly out of Separate Tac, by Separatist.
Dennie and Kris Hill’s Corona Cartel colt Whata Corona Runner earned $3,672 for finishing third. Bret Vickery saddled the son of champion and All American Futurity(G1) winner Ab What A Runner, by Roal Quick Dash. Gregorio Arriaga had the riding assignment.
A Mere Dynasty, who was going after his fifth straight victory, broke slowly and never challenge while finishing ninth. A First Down Snow lost the rider about halfway through the race. A First Down Snow went back to the barn area her own power.
The complete order of finish is as follows: Tres Of Linda, Attack The Cartel, Whata Corona Runner, Jess Dapper, Tellers First Affair, What A Doll SR, Lil Sharky, Veyron, A Mere Dynasty and A First Down Snow.

Tres Of Linda Shows Promise In Adequan Los Alamitos
Cypress, CA – August 24, 2012 - Jolene Hales and Christian and Ru Ann Singletary’s homebred Tres of Linda looked like a filly with a graded-stakes future when she sped to a one-length victory in the $36,720 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge on Friday night at the Orange County track.
Tres Of Linda, the 8-5 second choice, quickly showed her dominance when she raced to an early lead and then held a one-length advantage at the finish. She covered the 400 yards in 19.826 for her second-straight win and third victory in her latest four starts.
Rodrigo Aceves was aboard for trainer Scott Willoughby.
Long shots filled the second- and third-place positions. Attack The Cartel, at 33-1, was second by one-and-one-quarter length ahead of 22-1 outsider Whata Corona. The 8-5 second choice Tres Of Linda over the two long shots keyed a $433.50 trifecta payoff for one dollar.
A daughter of Tres Seis, Tres Of Linda could be ready for more important races and she now has the opportunity to compete in the $200,000 Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G1) at Prairie Meadows on October 27. She is also eligible for the Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).
Tres Of Linda won her maiden at first asking nearly a year ago and then placed in her trials to the Golden State Million Futurity, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and the Los Alamitos Winter Derby before winning a non-winners-of two allowance race, the first win of her current streak of three wins from four starts.
