A little Perks Alive History

On the day he was born, lets just say he didnt look too spiffy........  Actually he looked more like a drowned bat.

And so became his nickname/barn name - Batman which was shortened to just "BAT".  Had I known what was to transpire later on  I might have picked a more regal name.

I found bat when he was about 30 minutes old and Rocket (his dam) didnt really want to share.  After a couple foot chases and a discussion she relented and Bat and I have been big buddies ever since. He was born a silver mousey grey (bat color) and within a week, turned a blue black color. As he grew, he continued to impress me in many ways, but I raise horses to sell and a reasonable price was put on him during his yearling year.  A buyer missed owning this horse for 3500.00.

I had entertained the possibility that he might be homozygous for the black gene; being that both parents were true black in color.  Turns out I was correct....

Perks Alive is not capable of siring any sorrel foals.  They can be black, grey, grulla, buckskin or bay and all will have black legs, and most have striking peculiar face markings just like him.  Most of his foal have rear stockings or socks.

His two year old year  - He was sent out to be broke and made ready for race training.  Two weeks later I was diagnoised with serious breast cancer for the second time in two years, and had recently lost a long time job.  Income was limited so the trainer was called and Perks Alive was shipped home.

Several friends who had seen him at the farm had shown interest in breeding to him, and I had a few mares myself and wouldnt be able to pay studs fees during my illness - in fact I almost lost everything.  The decision to stand him as a two year old was not really by choice, more out of desperation, and I hoped that it wouldnt ruin his good nature down the road.  So off to the breeding farm he went at only two.  He took everything in stride and came through for me, produced some income and got my mares in foal.

My illness lingered on, and there were terrible complications to go with it.  I almost died of a blood infection.and spent most of the year in the hospital and then with a nurse at home. For a long time it was hard for me to even walk to my bedroom.  (I thank god everyday, for friends and strangers that helped out & that I am able  get up each day,  walk outside to do chores and see these horses that he has blessed me with).

He wasnt even truly broke until  late in his three year old year.  How I hung on to him while I sold most everthing else was a blessing from god.

Sharin hall got on him in September of his three year old year, way behind schedule and did an amazing job trying to get him ready.  He was started on the barrels in October still way behind, but he liked it so we pressed on and entered him at San Antonio in Februrary which was really pushing it.  We didnt expect anything, we were really just getting him some hauling time and over night experience to see how he would handle all that.

He ran 14th in the second go round (hit a barrel in the first go) and we knew we had something, but he was still really green.  Had it not been for his amazing mind and manners, he would have flunked out from the pressure. His mind was as good as gold, and he was as honest as one can be, and he wanted to turn a barrel.

THE REST OF THE STORY IS PART HISTORY & PART STILL ON GOING.  HE HAS DANCED ALL THE DANCES HIS FUTURITY & DERBY YEARS , HAS DONE EVERYTHING WE HAVE ASKED OF HIM, HAS BEEN IN THE BREEDING SHED & RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME EVERY YEAR SINCE HE WAS TWO.

HE CONTINUES TO RUN IN THE TOP AGAINST THE BEST HORSES IN THE COUNTRY, HANDLES ANY TYPE OF GROUND GOOD OR BAD.  HE MAKES THE SAME BEAUTIFUL RUN EVERYTIME, HAS NEVER FALLEN, REFUSED, DUCKED OR RUN OFF, HE IS AS HONEST AS THE DAY IS LONG AND HE LOVES TO RUN BARRELS.

HE HAS NEVER NEEDED ANY VET CARE, HAS NEVER BEEN INJECTED FOR ANY PROBLEMS, AND HAS NEVER TAKEN A LAME STEP IN HIS LIFE.  HE IS AN IRON HORSE WITH A GENTLEMANS MIND AND I SEE THIS IN HIS BABIES EVERYDAY.

IM HUMBLED BY THE MANY GENEROUS OFFERS TO BUY HIM, BUT HE WILL REMAIN HERE AT TEXOMA IN THE STALL HE WAS BORN IN.

THE MAGIC WILL START ALL OVER AGAIN THIS DECEMBER WHEN HIS FIRST SMALL CROP COMPETES AT OKC AND IN 2008.

PERKS ALIVE WILL BE AT THE JOSEY JR WORLD WITH HIS 12 YR OLD JR RIDER - WHITLEY JO VANN IN THE FIRST WEEKEND IN MAY 2008.
